Jakov Jakoulov is an author of three ballets, five instrumental
concertos, five string quartets, music for over 20 theatrical,
TV and cinema productions and numerous symphonic, chamber and
choral works.
In recent years Jakoulov’s music has been presented
by London’s New European Strings Orchestra, Boston Symphony
Tanglewood Contemporary Music Festival, “Future Classics”
Series with Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Chamber
Concerts, Armenian National Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra, New England String Ensemble, Bachanalia Festival
Orchestra, among others.
Recipient of six Annual Awards of the American Society of
Composers, Authors and Publishers, Doctor of Music of Boston
University, Elected Member of National Honor Music Society,
Jakov Jakoulov has international reputation with commissions
and performances of his works in Germany, Sweden, Scotland,
Finland, Italy, Mexico, Armenia, Russia, Israel as well as the
United States.

Since beginning his professional career at the age twelve, Jakov
Jakoulov has gained a considerable experience as both composer
and pianist. His works have been commissioned and performed
by Armenian State National Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony
Orchestra, Orchestra of Bolshoi State Opera and Ballet Theatre,
Kammerspiele Theater and Free Center of Modern Music in Munich,
Germany, Swedish Theater “Lilla”, the String Quartet
of National Symphony of Russia, BBC Scotland, Dudley House Music
Series at Harvard University, Dallas Chamber Music Society in
Texas, WGBH Public Radio, “Trillum”, ALEA III, New
England String Ensemble in Boston, “Bachanalia”
Chamber Orchestra in New York City, Dallas Symphony Orchestra,
among others.
In 1996 Jakoulov was elected to Pi Kappa Lambda Chapter of
the National Music Honor Society and was nominated for Annual
Award in music composition of American Academy of Arts and Letters.
During last five years Jakoulov has received Annual Award of
American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
In 1999 he has received a commission from World-Wide Concurrent
Premieres Commissioning Fund and National Guild of Community
Schools of the Arts and American Composers Forum to write a
composition to be premiered in 15 locations throughout United
States.
In 1998 violist Michael Zaretsky with pianist Zak Bjerken
have recorded two Jakoulov’s compositions on a CD entitled
“Black Snow” among music of D. Shostakovich and
M. Glinka. This CD was chosen in a “Top Five Classical
Recordings List” by “Fanfare” Magazine for
1999.
In 1999-2003 Jakoulov has recorded three CD’s of piano
improvisations – “Emma’s Songs”, “Children
of the Wind” and “Within Four Walls”.
In 2001 saxophonist Kenneth Radnofsky included Jakoulov’s
composition in his CD of contemporary music of American composers.
Jakoulov’s music was reviewed by “Strings”,
“American Record Guide”, “Strad”, “Fanfare”,
“New Music Connoisseur” “Saxophone Journal”
magazines, by various newspapers including “New York Times”,
“Boston Glob”, “Phoenix” and “Boston
Herald”. His CD’s are distributed by SHAR Products
Company, “Bay Side”, “Boston Records”,
“Borders”, “Tower Records”, and Amazon.com.
In 2001 he has joined the “RUVO Classic Artist Management”
established in Prague, Czech Republic by the Europe Members
Committee in Culture, Science and Education as a concert pianist
among leading artists from various European countries.
In 2004 Jakoulov wrote a ballet “All at Once” which
was commissioned by Anna Myer ‘s Dance Company with collaboration
of New England String Ensemble and Juliard School.
In recent years Jakoulov’s music has been presented
in numerous festivals and concerts such as “Tuscan Sun”
International Music Festival in Cortona, Italy, Tanglewood Contemporary
Music Festival, “Future Classics” Series in Dallas
Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Chamber Concerts Series,
XIII Festival de Invierno in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico,
XXXV Musikkileiri Festival in Finland, XIV “Bach and Beyond”
Festival in Merkin Concert Hall in New York City (Bachanalia
Festival Orchestra), Concervatorio di Musica in Queretaro, Mexico,
in Sanders Theatre at Harvard University in Cambridge, in S.
Rubin Israel Academy of Music in Tel-Aviv among others.
Jakov Jakoulov was born in Moscow, Russia, where he studied
in Gnesin Music Academy and Moscow Conservatory as pianist and
composer. In 1987 Jakoulov left Moscow to begin to work in Munich,
Germany and elsewhere in Europe. Since 1990 he lives in Boston,
Massachusetts. He is a former member of the faculties of Bellarmine
College in Louisville, Kentucky, Boston University and Community
Music Center in Boston.
Jakov Jakoulov holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Composition
of Boston University. His teachers have included Theodore Antoniou
and Lukas Foss.
